A little note
on privacy.
Last updated October 23, 2026.
This policy covers the Sauntered app and the sauntered.com website. The launch-notification and website sections describe website signups; the other sections describe the app unless stated otherwise.
Sauntered is a personal atlas: you save places, and the app helps you remember why. This policy explains what we collect, why, and who touches it. The short version: we collect what the product needs to work, we don't run ads, we don't sell your data, and we don't track you across other apps.
Your launch notification
When you enter your email and select “Notify me at launch,” we collect that address so we can let you know when Sauntered is ready. Signing up here does not create an app account.
How the website works
Netlify hosts this website and processes form submissions for us. Your submission is stored in our Netlify account. Hosting and spam prevention may also involve technical information such as your IP address and request details. See Netlify’s privacy policy for information about its service.
This landing page does not include advertising pixels or third-party analytics scripts. Fonts and artwork are served with the website.
Change your mind?
To ask us to remove your launch-notification signup, or for a question about your information, email support@sauntered.com.
What we collect
- Your email address, if you give one. You can sign in with it (a one-time code), or with your phone number instead, in which case you don't need an email at all. Sign in with Apple users can hide their email; the relay address Apple provides works fine. You can add or change your email in Profile → Edit profile → Email.
- Your phone number, if you add one. It's optional. If you sign in with your phone, or add a number in Edit profile, we use it to text you a one-time sign-in code. Clerk sends those texts and holds the number; we don't use it for anything else, don't show it to other Sauntered users, and don't store it in our own database. Texts go only to numbers in the United States and Canada. You can change your number in Profile → Edit profile → Phone number.
- Your profile details. Your display name, handle, profile photo, and the account identifier we use to keep your data attached to the right account.
- Friends and sharing choices. We store friend requests, accepted friendships and blocked contacts to help you find people and control requests. We do not access or upload your phone's address book. Closed requests and removed friendships are scheduled for removal after 30 days; active friendships and blocks remain until removed or your account is deleted.
- The places you save, and what you write about them. Saved places, the one-line reason you saved each one, visit notes and ratings, lists, and events you put on a calendar.
- Photos you choose to add. A photo you take or pick when saving a place, and a profile photo if you set one. If a photo has location metadata (most phone photos do), we read it to figure out where the place is.
- Places you share from Maps. When you share a place to Sauntered from Apple Maps or Google Maps, the shared link is sent to our server to find the place, which is then saved to your account like any other. No AI service is involved.
- Your location, only while you're using the app. With your permission, we use it to center the map on you and to prefer nearby results when you search for a place. iOS asks you first, and the app works without it.
- What you search or ask for. Place-search text is processed to return matches. If you use AI features, your written requests and the version and date of your permission are processed or stored to provide those features. If you use Ask, your questions and its answers are kept with your account so you can come back to a chat, as described under Ask.
- A home neighborhood, if you set one. Optional. We store an approximate point and the neighborhood's name, not the address you typed; it is only used for suggestions near home. It is not shown to other Sauntered users; assistants you connect may use the neighborhood label and distances for nearby suggestions. You can clear it from your profile.
We do not collect your phone's address book, browsing history, health data, payment details, or analytics about how you use the app. There are no ad or tracking SDKs in Sauntered. We keep operational logs to diagnose errors and protect the service.
How your data is used
Everything we collect is used to run the product: showing your map, finding the place you're trying to save, generating short place summaries, answering your questions in Ask, and keeping your account working. Nothing is used for advertising, and nothing is sold or rented to anyone.
Services that process your data
Sauntered runs on a small set of infrastructure providers. Each one sees only what its job requires:
- Clerk handles sign-in. It holds the email address and phone number you give it, and login sessions, and it sends the one-time sign-in codes by email and by text message.
- Render hosts our servers and database, where your saved places, notes, lists, events and Ask chats live.
- Cloudflare stores files — the photos you upload and generated list covers.
- Google (Places) resolves the places you search for, including a place you ask Ask to save. Search text and, when available, nearby coordinates are sent to find the right match; place details like addresses and hours come back.
- Anthropic (Claude) writes place summaries from public place details — name, type, cuisine, price level, address, hours, website, city and neighborhood — which involve none of your personal data and need no permission. With your AI permission, it also processes photos you select, links you paste, your written requests and searches, and your saved location/category names for place recognition, search and collection suggestions. When you use Ask, it processes your questions and the saved places Ask looks up to answer them (see Ask below).
- OpenAI, with your AI permission, generates optional collection covers. It receives your cover instructions, collection title/description, city and place-type context, and the selected generated artwork when you request an edit. Uploaded place photos and private place notes are not included in cover-generation requests.
- Resend delivers reports you send to our support inbox by email.
- Inngest coordinates background processing. Workflow state can include selected capture content, account/item identifiers, and photo location metadata.
- Assistants you connect (Claude, ChatGPT). If you connect Sauntered to an assistant, it can read the places you saved and act using the permissions you grant through that assistant. We record which assistant you connected and when. We receive the tool requests and arguments needed for its actions, rather than the full conversation by default.
Each of these service providers is bound by its agreement with us, or by its published data-processing terms, to protect your information at least as well as this policy does, and to use it only to provide its service to Sauntered. Assistants you connect yourself are the exception: they act for you, under your own agreement with them.
AI features are optional. They use Anthropic’s Claude, and OpenAI for collection covers; the app’s permission sheet names both in its fine print. Before using them, you can review the providers and information involved and choose whether to allow processing. Turn permission off in Profile → Edit profile → AI features. This stops future AI requests; it cannot recall requests already sent. Ordinary place lookup, manual saving, ratings and ordinary collections remain available. Assistant connections have a separate authorization flow.
Ask
Ask is a chat in the app for questions about the places you've saved, like “what's still to try in the West Village?” Anthropic's Claude writes the answers from your own saved places. Nothing is sent until you send a question or tap one of the suggestions on Ask's first page, which the app makes on your phone from your own places.
Ask can also save a new place, change your rating of a place or add a place to one of your lists, but only after you confirm. It shows you the change first (for a new place, the name and address Google found), and nothing is saved or changed until you tap to confirm it; Not now leaves everything as it was. If you confirm adding a place to a list you share with other people, they'll see it there, as they would if you added it yourself.
When you send a question, we send Anthropic:
- your question, with the earlier messages in the same chat (or a short summary of the older ones) so it can follow the conversation;
- the saved places it looks up to answer: their names, addresses, hours and other place details, with your reasons and notes, ratings, visits, tags and the names of the lists they're on;
- when you ask it to save a new place, the public details Google returns for the places that match, like their names and addresses;
- a little context so it knows where to look: the date and time on your phone and its time zone, the cities and neighborhoods you've saved places in and how many, the names of your lists (including lists shared with you) and how many places each holds, and the name of the neighborhood you set as home (with distances from it when you ask what's nearby), never its location.
Ask only reads places you saved yourself. It doesn't send the names, notes or places of the other people on a shared list, and it doesn't send your email address, phone number or photos with your questions. To find a new place you ask it to save, Ask sends Google the place's name and area from your question and, when available, a nearby point, as the app's own place search does.
When Ask isn't sure which of your saved places you mean, or what it is, it may search the web for that place's name and city through our AI provider, Anthropic. Nothing else about you goes with the search, and the pages it used are shown under the answer.
Ask's camera works like Add from a photo: with your AI permission, the photo you take goes through the same place recognition to find and save the place, which then appears in the chat. The photo isn't part of what Ask sends with your questions.
Your chats are kept with your account on our servers so you can come back to them: your questions, the answers, the details of the places each answer looked up, as they were at the time, and the changes Ask offered and whether you confirmed them. A chat is deleted 90 days after its last message, and only your latest 100 chats are kept. Chats you pin (up to 20) stay until you unpin or delete them. You can delete a chat at any time (swipe it in Chats), or delete them all, pinned ones included, with Clear all chats. Deleting your account deletes all of them. Because a chat keeps what was said at the time, changing or deleting a place doesn't change a chat that mentioned it; delete the chat to remove it. Our logs record that Ask was used, how long it took and whether it worked, never what you asked or what it answered.
Ask is one of Sauntered's AI features and uses the same AI permission. Because Ask sends the names of your saved places and your notes about them, which the other AI features don't, the app asks for that permission again, once, with wording that includes Ask, if you allowed AI features before Ask existed. Until you allow it, Ask and the other AI features stay closed; ordinary place lookup, saving by hand or from Maps, ratings and collections keep working. Turning AI features off in Profile → Edit profile → AI features stops Ask from sending anything new. Your chats stay until you delete them.
What other people can see
People can find your display name, handle and profile photo in the app. Opening your profile or accepting a friend request does not share your saved places, map, personal stats or friend list. Those remain private. Friends make it easier to choose recipients when you explicitly share a collection.
Your atlas is private by default. If you create an unlisted share link for a list, anyone with that link can see the list name and its places, but not your private notes, ratings, tags, or save history. You can revoke the link. If you join a list someone shared with you, or invite someone to yours, the other members of that list can see the places each of you adds to it, your name, handle, and profile photo, and when you added them. Shared collection members can see one another’s ratings and To try status for places in that collection. Notes, reasons and visit history stay private. Public collection pages do not include personal ratings. You can leave a list at any time; the places you added stay on it with your name. Calendar members can see what is on a calendar shared with them.
Blocking someone stops friend requests and new collection invitations between you, and they can no longer find you in the app. It also hides their places, ratings, name and profile photo from you in any collection you are both on, and hides yours from them. Nothing is deleted: you both stay on those collections, and unblocking brings everything back. Unblocking does not restore a friendship automatically.
Reports
If you report a person or a shared collection, we keep the report: your account, the person or collection you reported, the reason you chose, any note you add, and when you sent it. It is emailed to our support inbox so we can review it. Reports are used only for moderation, and the person you report is not told who reported them. We keep reports as a moderation record. If an account named in a report is deleted, the report stays but no longer links to it.
Deleting your account
You can request account deletion inside the app (Profile → Edit profile → Delete account). This removes your account and associated saved-place records, notes, collections, events and Ask chats from the active database and starts removal of your uploaded media and sign-in account. Deletion is not reversible. File cleanup and provider processing can take additional time, and backup or operational records may remain until the relevant retention period ends. Contact us if you need help confirming a deletion.
Data security
Traffic between the app and our servers uses HTTPS. Photos are stored privately and served through expiring signed links, not public URLs.
Children
Sauntered is for people 13 and older. It is not directed at children. If you believe a child under 13 has an account, email support@sauntered.com and we will delete it.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
